1950's era of rock-n-roll & pin-up girls inspire Erika Hendrix

German fashion designers Erika Hendrix is set to debut her Spring/Summer 2010 collection in February 2010. The collection is inspired from the vintage 1950's era of rock-n-roll and pin-up girls. This theme is illustrated throughout the collection by the use of bows & ribbons, round collars, poodle skirts, and rompers, with a distinct motif that cohesively brings every piece together.

"I just love the 1950's style. The clothes, the music, the hair, everything! The cuts were so flattering and also sexy without showing a lot of skin," says the designer. "I think I took more of a risk with this collection with the prints and cuts." The SS 2010 collection mainly uses cotton fabrics with pastel colors, leopard and berry prints. The German designer recruited Caroline B. from Most Wanted Models to model in the campaign, and boasts 30 pieces that will range from sizes XS-L.

"I think by having a boutique I see first hand what people want and what looks good on them. So I keep that in mind with every piece I design. I am always inspired by everything. I could be putting out a collection every 2 weeks," Erika states. "I don't look at what other designers are doing. I don't look at what's in style. I do my own thing and get inspired by everyday life."

Jersey City fashion designer's line Cuffe Parade focuses on comfort, contemporary style

In her Downtown Jersey City apartment, 31-year-old designer Rehna Pendse sketches and designs looks for what she hopes could be fashion's next big brand.

Cuffe Parade, named after Pendse's birthplace in India, is a clothing line that the FIT graduate says emphasizes both comfort and style.

"I want to make sure the woman is comfortable in her clothing," said Pendse. "My aesthetic is just really easy dressing but it has to have some sort of fun element to it at all times, like pops of color."

Pendse's clothing is made with natural fibers and often feature elaborate beading done in India, she said, adding that some pieces take 100 hours to bead.

The designer said she hopes her clothing appeals to women who want trendy, high-quality clothing "that can compare to Valentino" without paying a Valentino price.

"My line is a very high-end, high-quality collection but at a contemporary price," said Pendse. " It's for a woman who likes good things but doesn't want to spend a huge amount."

Pieces from her collection retail for as low as $70, she said, adding that fully beaded items can sell for up to $600. Most items, however, range from $150 to $200, Pendse said.

Only in its second season, the line has been attracting some attention and is currently available in New York boutiques. Soon, Pendse said, Cuffe Parade will also be sold in Dallas and Los Angeles stores and through her website.

"People are responding to it even despite the economy being so bad. It's growing at a steady pace," said Pendse.

"The economy is my biggest enemy right now because it's the one thing out of my control. But the more your name is around, it gets better and better," said the designer. "It takes a lot of networking and you need to have a great line, but you'll get there. It will just take a longer time."
Overall, Pendse foresees good things.

"My short-term goals are to get better representation and get into more stores around the country. My long-term goal is to be established as a lifestyle brand," she said. "I love fashion but I also do interior design on the side - I have a lot of creativity in me."

Favorite Stars Win Big at the People's Choice Awards

She's the People's Choice Award winner for Best Pop Artist, a fact that got Demi Lovato all choked up during the live awards show at the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

"The nominees are all people I look up to, and have aspired to be," Lovato admitted as she clutched her heavy Waterford crystal prize. Her competition was Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Katy Perry; Perry snagged five of the glittering statues, but missed the fun.

But the thousands of fans that packed the venue were not disappointed, as top stars from film, television and music filled the front rows and caused serious shrieking as they hit the stage. "Glee" star Lea Michele thanked her parents for their support as she won Favorite TV Comedy Actress, and Adam Sandler broke up the house with thanks to all his "public school teachers" when he won Favorite Comedic Movie Actor.

Faith Hill belted out "Come Home," her latest hit single, and Neil Patrick Harris gave the assemblage a giggle as he tried to take over hosting duties from Kaley Cuoco. He also won for Favorite TV Comedy Actor, and admonished his young twins at home in his acceptance speech to "go to bed!"

No one could have slept through the shrieking as Robert Pattison took the stage to accept the Favorite Drama Movie prize for "Water for Elephants." His newly shaven head didn't deter the screaming fans from almost drowning out his speech and the excitement didn't stop there. The crowd went crazy for presenters Ian Somerhalder, Ginnifer Goodwin, Julianne Hough and Ewan McGregor, who gave Morgan Freeman the first annual Favorite Movie Icon award.

And the biggest excitement of the night didn't come for the younger stars that graced the show, like Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens, Adam Levine, Kat Dennings, Nina Dobrev or Jennifer Morrison. That was reserved for beloved Betty White, who took home the trophy for her "Hot in Cleveland" win for Favorite Cable TV Comedy and is about to celebrate her 90th birthday on Jan. 17.

"I didn't do anything to get to 90," White said with a chuckle. "It just crept up on me!"

Knitwear label Coven lights up Rio fashion show

Glittering caballeras in Lurex pantsuits dominated the catwalks Wednesday on day two of Rio de Janeiro's winter 2012 fashion week.

While many of the other displays have felt indistinguishable from the kinds of urban looks that dominate catwalks worldwide, a stellar south-of-the-border equestrian collection from Coven boldly forged a style of its own.

The brand, based in the interior state of Minas Gerais, is known for its knits. And designer Liliane Rebehy delivered with Wednesday's collection: Her flirty crocheted skirts, mariachi-style pant suits in copper colored Lurex and T-shirts covered in fancy geometric embroidery managed to be at once totally unique and utterly appealing.

The day's other highlight was the catwalk appearance of the three Brazilian soap opera stars, who walked at TNG. The audience shrieked and snapped cellphone pictures as the actors took to the runway in rustic chic denim separates.

At 2nd Floor, designer Thiago Marcon focused his attention on a most improbable Brazilian fabric, covering his flirty chemisier dresses in printed chiffon in a patchwork of what looked to be faux fur. Beyond being hard to wear in a tropical climate, the material was bulky, and the fur-fronted skirts made even the rail-thin models look more than a little hippy.

Still, the lighter pieces were appealing, especially the ivory chiffon blouses and dresses printed with an oversized growling lion. Graphic, boyish touches gave the clothes a slightly modish feel.
